How it all starts with a tiny rumor, then, everything snowballs, turning something that IS, very positive to something completely, NEGATIVE, and it’s all due to the unrelated “bystanders” commenting on things that’s not even THEIR businesses to comment on! The recent announcement of my firm that the hotel in Sun-Moon Lagoon will be trying out the three-days off weekend systems, it’d made me experience the negatives of internet.
From before the company I worked for announced to the press that starting in September, it will be on a trial basis, starting the three-day weekends, because there’d been discussions of shortages of workers especially in the service industries for long, so, the announcement of implementation of this policy got the attention of the press, and on the day, there were many of the online presses that came to interview.
The questions posed by the press, and the reports gave clarity to the company’s policies that’s about to be implemented, all my coworkers had the inquiries from all around, wanting to understand the specifics of the new policies. And, after a few days, all the feedbacks were mostly, positive, and everybody also expected to see positive results for the six-months trial period. It’s just, as I was surfing the web, I saw someone used the cut-off of the report, with hundreds of messages underneath it, I got curious, and clicked in; I’d found, that most of the comments showed lack of understanding of what the new rules being implemented were, then, they’d left the negative comments, and using the angle of doubt to examine the policies of my company.
Some were misled to believe, that the extra day off is one extra day of unpaid work; some guessed that we’d implemented the three-day weekend because the business isn’t going well, that without the customers, we can all have, four days of work, off; some said, that the three days of the weekends tapped into the national holiday schedules, or that we would be working ten-hour days on the four days of the week we are required to go to work; and some said that the hotel is using the three-day weekend, as a preset to lay off more employees, that we’re aiming at getting the waves of positive comments.

In actuality, we’d, cut the forty hour workweek down to thirty-two, and maintained the original payrates. We’d done somewhat better compared to last year, not only did we not lose money, we’d, gained some growth, this has nothing to do with not having enough business. And, the hotel would not need to hire the extra temp employees, because we’re reducing the staff, instead, we’re needing to hire extra employees, to fulfill the shift schedule requirements of the three-day weekend systems. Simply stated, under the setting of the pay being the same, the employees gained fifty-two days worth of extra vacation days; and if the increases of these days of, can’t be fulfilled by every member of the departments, then, those who worked extra will receive the extra overtime pays. In reality, implementing this new system, benefits my coworkers even more, there’s no downside.
My owner’s original beliefs is to helping the workers gained the balance of their work and their life outside of working, and that’s why he was willing, to take up this extra expenditure, hoping that in the four days that we do work, we will have more efficiency, more passion, to increase customer satisfaction, and on the three days off, we get to rest fully or enjoy our times with the families. And, whether or not these goals will be met, it’s still, dependent on the six-months’ trial basis, we are not fully confident, but we keep our fingers crossed, that the new system will work well.
There are many researches after the pandemic, discussing how there’s a switch in the means of younger generations work, that they’d place having enough time of their own as their priorities. And, there’s a shortage of employees globally now, if we don’t make the innovative changes, we would be duplicating past behaviors, expecting different, results, and so, we go bald on this. But now, from the online comments, there’s more of the negative than the, positive. Before they comment, they’d not spend time, to search more into the proposals, and would use a negative overtone to interpret, and the online members do NOT hold back on their, criticisms that are, negative.
After I’d read up on all these negative comments, I’d explained the company’s policies on FB, and, it’d, accidentally became a news report, with the labels of “the C.E.O. hits back at the trolls!” Actually, I had NO intentions of , “hitting” anybody “back”, I just, feel that there’s a need to show that there’s this, negative interpretation going around the internet, that’s, trending in society right now.
As the internet was on the rise, there was very high expectation of it, and as everybody gained her/his rights to speak out, the internet became a discussion forum for the civics and rational thought. And, after so many years, the anonymity and the factions of the online communities had driven the internet toward the negative, causing this huge opposition of views in society, it’s such a shame. Structurally, we can only do so much, so long as we demand ourselves, to check our own facts before we post, using our rationality to make the, comments over the things we read up on.

On the three-day weekend, I will use the famous American writer, Sigler, “You’re not building a career, but to cultivate people, people are building the careers”.
So, this is how the online world can TROLL something that was positive, into something so very, negative, and it doesn’t even INVOLVE these people who’d made these negative comments, they’re just, firing at random, feeling that it’s my right, I have the justifications to make comment on everything I come across online, before even CHECK the facts, and this, is really bad, because with so much information online, if you don’t have the sound judgments to note if something is sound or isn’t, then, you’re easily misled, and everything snowballs…
